About the Theme: One of the distinctive characteristics of theologies done and lived
latinamente is the privileging of lo cotidiano as legitimate and necessary source for
teología y pastoral de conjunto. Both faith and popular culture are interwoven in the
context of our daily living. The intersection of popular culture and religion is not
easily distinguishable. It is impossible, without distortion, to separate the strands. This
colloquium seeks to explore ―theologically latinamente‖ the intersections of faith and
popular culture.
There is no monolithic understanding of popular culture. As Ilan Stavans has noted in
Lengua Fresca: Latinos Writing on the Edge,
"the border—la línea—dividing high and pop culture is becoming increasingly
difficult to trace. The United States has a fluid approach to culture, one often
following a dialectical path: what is considered low (jazz and pulp fiction, for
instance) is eventually co-opted by the cultural elite" (p. xix)
Popular culture remains an arena constructed and contested. For Latin@́s y
Hispan@́s popular culture is situated amidst the imaginary and actualidad. Grounded
in daily lived experience, popular culture is simultaneously product and process. It
involves originating communities of creation and communities of reception
