Chem 405 Biochemistry Lab I

Why have a laboratory notebook? Isn't this just busy work? Don't worry, I'll remember what I did in lab. I'll just write down my results on scratch paper and fill in the details later. We have all made these comments about laboratory notebooks. Lab notebooks are not the students (nor the professors) favorite part of laboratory or research classes. However, communication is an essential part of conducting laboratory experiments. We gain practice in keeping notebooks in classes so we know how to do it when we work in research laboratories. Much of the value of collecting experimental data is lost if proper records are not kept. If methods and results are not clearly written and recorded, this information cannot be effectively transmitted to other scientists (including your professor). Maintaining good laboratory notebooks is especially important in this class, since the experiments may be conducted over several weeks. The following guidelines should be strictly adhered to for the recording of laboratory exercises. ... intelligent title, not just the name of the experiment copied from the laboratory manual. ... information from the laboratory manual.

Distributed NoSQL Database Work at 3Pillar - 3Pillar Global

The NoSQL database movement has grown out of a need for massive horizontal scaling on cheap hardware. The term NoSQL itself is an unfortunate one; it ...In the past, very few companies had more than a few thousand users. Now many have hundreds of millions of users distributed globally. Less than ten years ago, web applications were largely static. Now, web applications have a high degree of interactivity allowing users to generate their own content, rate content generated by others, and share content with their friends. Furthermore, recommendation engines make very sophisticated suggestions based on the user’s usage history, trends observed in groups of users with similar demographics or preferences, and so on. Search engines constantly innovate to provide more relevant search results and better performance. A common thread to all of the above application trends is dealing with massive amounts of data that often has to be globally distributed, since users have high expectations in terms of access speed and availability. Amazon for example projected that a 0.1 second increase in load time would decrease sales by 1%. Bing and Google found that a delay as small as 0.4 seconds reduced usage of that site – on that visit and in future visits....

Using Hands-On Activities to Engage Students in Engineering ... - SEFI

Using Hands-On Activities to Engage Students in. Engineering Mechanics. T Lucke. Senior Lecturer in Engineering. University of the Sunshine Coast ...Much of the pivotal engineering education research in the last two decades promotes studentcentred learning and active learning principles. Active learning principles recognise that when students are actively engaged with their learning, they are much more likely to understand the concepts. The degree to which a student is engaged with their academic work or experience is one of the crucial factors in determining the student’s educational development. The more involved and engaged the student is with the program, the greater his or her level of knowledge acquisition and general cognitive development [1]. Bonwell and Eison [2] explain that when students are actively involved, they engage in higher-order thinking tasks such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Another important finding that is emerging from current engineering education literature is the value of successful group collaboration project work for students’ personal and academic development. Group collaboration not only encourages the deep learning approaches needed to fully understand the material, but also acquaints students with other class members and helps build a sense of community with them....

Chapter 1 Managerial Accounting in the Information Age

The planning and control process begins with the development of a plan. Managers take actions to implement the plan and the results of their actions are evaluated by comparing actual results to the plan. Evaluation supports control of the organization. Anticipating that the evaluation process will affect rewards/punishments, managers work to achieve planned results. The evaluation process may also identify operations that need to be changed or indicate that plans should be revised....Managerial Accounting in the Information Age. QUESTIONS. 1. In memory of Zig Ziglar - Coach Bru

Too many sales people fall into the colossal bear-trap known as result-oriented thinking. Instead if you simply work on your selling skills and mental skills, then go sell by trusting the work you’ve put in you can not only better accept the results but also get better results. The sales profession is so oriented towards results with metrics like: sales quotas, closing ratios, budgets, and quarterly goals that sales professionals have difficulty evaluating themselves on how well they have worked their process. Think about it, if the result of what you are trying to do (such as land a new client or upsell an existing one) is outside of your control, you need to focus on the process of selling rather than on the results of your work....What we can control is our response. Our response centers around our effort, energy and emotions. We each face challenges as sales professionals; some are more daunting than others. Wasting time with negative emotions like complaining about problems or blaming the buyer when you face rejection serves no useful purpose whatsoever. It only drains your energy and those around you. I do not believe anyone in history has ever gotten a positive outcome from negative thinking...

Annual Report 2005 - Asia Travel

Asiatravel’s core online hotel reservation business and business model has proven to be very resilient and robust. This was evidenced by the fact that the Group has remained profitable year after year notwithstanding the many external shocks to the travel industry, such as the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, SARS and terrorist acts in some of the destinations it represents. The Group has been particularly impacted during the financial year 2005, as scarce managerial resources had been stretched and the Group’s focus had strayed from its core online business. In light of this, the Board of Directors and Management has made an important strategic decision to re-focus all of the Group’s resources on its core online hotel reservation business. Looking at the core online hotel reservation business Hotel reservation is an activity that a would-be free independent traveller (FIT) has to embark on to complete the arrangements for his/her travel accommodation. First there is an information gathering process, followed by decision making on a particular accommodation and finally to complete the process with a confirmed booking. These are all done in advance of the FIT’s actual travel....www.asiatravel.com. Asiatravel.com. Contents. 01. Chairman's Statement. 2. Board of Directors. 18. Management Team. 19.
