Jul 22, 2011 ... In June 2011, the High Court ruled that a London school's ban of the “cornrows” hairstyle was unlawful, indirect racial discrimination and that it could not be justified. A boy was refused entry to St Gregory's Catholic Science College in Harrow on his first day because he had the cornrows hairstyle. The boy who was African-Caribbean, had not cut his hair since birth in accordance with family tradition, and wore his hair in braids close to his scalp. The family took the school to Court, claiming the style was of ethnic significance and of importance to the boy’s cultural identity, and therefore the ban was discriminatory. Lawyers for the family argued that the school's position breached both race and sex discrimination laws (Girls at the school were permitted to wear cornrows). It was submitted that the school’s policy disregarded the cultural values and norms of the local community. The school argued that hairstyles could be badges of gang identity. The school said it did not regard cornrows as specifically gang-related, but claimed that allowing them would make it harder to exclude other styles such as the skinhead cut....
