STRESS ANALYSIS IN AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER ...

BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER. A Thesis. Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements ... The reliability of automobile brake components is a very important issue from thepoint of view of safety. This thesis presents a combined experimental and numericalstress analysis of a vacuum booster. The booster consists of a thin-walled, closed shellthat contains a diaphragm and a mechanical control system. The master cylinder whichprovides hydraulic pressure to the components on the wheels, is mounted directly on thebooster shell using threaded bolts. The booster under consideration developed crack nearone of these bolts during an endurance test. The numerical stress analysis conducted heredemonstrated that significant stress concentration can be present on the booster shell nearthese mounting bolts. The numerical model was validated by direct comparison ofmeridional strains to experimental measurements at selected location...

Peluchi: Product Development of a Programmable Robotic Toy to Stimulate Interest ...... toymakers witnessed an increase in sales of robotic toys [3]. Additionally ...Statistically speaking, science, technology, and engineering are male dominated fields. Peluchi is a second-generation prototype of a programmable robotic toy targeted towards young girls in hope of promoting more interest in these areas. Peluchi is an educational toy designed to both appeal to girls aesthetically and stimulate them creatively and intellectually. The toy began as a group project for a class called SP. 779: Advance Toy Product Design in the fall of 2009. It existed as a much simpler prototype with a limited set of programmable actions. Since then, the group has continued to develop beta prototype within the course of a semester under the class 2.752: Design of Mechanical Products. Additional work has been done to add complexity and allow more user customization. This is achieved through the addition of modular accessories disguising different servos and sensors that can be plugged into the base unit. The prototype itself was also refined to be more seamless and robust. Analysis and extensive design work were concentrated on the custom ports for the accessories. Finally, manufacturability and marketing strategies were then explored and future plans were considered for the toy. Thesis Supervisor: Maria C. Yang Title: Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systems...

The Teaching of Structural Analysis - Welcome to JBM

2 FOREWORD Ian May and David Johnson approached The Ove Arup Foundation to seek our support for this paper. We were attracted by the proposal because we were ...In particular, it gave us the opportunity to encourage the authors to give some thought to how structural analysis could be taught in such a way as to encourage students to develop a ‘feel’ for how structures actually behave, and in so doing to create simplicity and elegance of thought and outcome. Our suggestions were very warmly received and taken up by the authors, and we hope their paper will help both teachers and students to exploit the opportunities that modern analytical techniques provide, including the power of computing, and not themselves to become a servant of them....

Evaluation and documentation of the water harvesting systems have helped begin development of design guidelines for water harvesting. Additionally, a design model was developed and continues to be field tested. This model has already been distributed to 60 professional in NC. The project heavily involved a team of students, on- and off-campus faculty and linked extension and students with both new (NC Museum of Natural Science) and established (City of Kinston and Craven County) cooperators. Portions of the project were featured on Almanac Gardener, a UNC-TV program that runs in spring and summer. Program Objectives: How they were met In the initial proposal, the following three objectives were identified: 1) Establish water harvesting demonstration sites with new and established collaborators and use the assistance of Extension Agents in each of the three counties.
