The United States has an unmarked advantage in developing and commercializing these technologies, as the Department of Energy has funded coal‐fired demonstration plants and small‐scale testing facilities to encourage the deployment of advanced coal‐fired systems. Industry has indicated that increased DOE funding for coal‐fired demonstration plants would be most beneficial for the development of cleaner burning coal systems. Once these systems prove to be efficient and commercially‐viable, industry looks to DOC to promote the exportation of clean coal technologies in countries where coal is the greatest energy resource.
