When I first started writing iOS Apps, coding in Objective-C was somewhat painful. Like stuck-in-acheckout-line-behind-the-old-woman-writing-a-personal-check painful. She’s still stuck in the 1980’s while everyone else uses debit cards. But then Apple made some major improvements to the language that st moved Objective-C into the 21 century. This chapter discusses these improvements, including a little something called Automatic Reference Counting. Objective-C still has room for improvement, but you will find it is coming more in line with modern programming languages thanks to Apple’s enhancements. Mastering Objective-C is one of your biggest learning curves—especially if you have never written code before. I recommend reviewing this chapter a few times before moving on to the next to make sure you have a firm grasp of Objective-C’s principles and language structure....

Most iOS devices outperform many dedicated handheld gaming devices. More recent devices, iPhone 4 and iPad 2, are, for certain games, performance competitive with consoles, Wii, XBox and PS3. This class will cover programming 2D games for casual players using the Cocos2D library. At the end of this class, the student should have a simple game worthy of publishing on the Apple App Store. 4. Prerequisites: This is not a beginning iOS programming class. Before being accepted to the class, students must demonstrate basic proficiency writing iOS applications using Objective-C; preferably with an application which is already available on the App Store. 5. Course Objectives At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Use the Cocos2D framework to write simple

The objective of the first assignment is to get you accustomed to the iOS development environment and use some of the basic features of Objective C to build a simple app. You will learn how to use the Storyboard, understand the View Controller and View, use Google Youtube library in your xcode project and get a hang of Callbacks in Objective C. You will also learn how to build and populate a list, a feature that is commonly present in a lot of apps in the store. For this assignment, you will use the Youtube Data API to fetch a playlist of popular videos of a channel (of your choice) and display it in the UITableView. Each UITableCellView should contain the thumbnail of the video and the video title. For those of you who would like to deploy the app on an actual device, you could implement a Detail View Controller, so that upon clicking a video in a cell, it should open and play the video in the in-‐built player. This part of the assignment is optional as the simulator does not have an in-‐built player. ...
