1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove engine wiring harness cover, and disconnect 3 connectors from left rear side of engine compartment. 2. Remove 4 crankshaft pulley bolts, and remove pulley from crankshaft. It is NOT necessary to remove the crankshaft center bolt. Remove engine harness cover from front of engine. 3. Remove timing belt cover. If reusing old belt, place mark on belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. 4. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 1 . Remove timing belt tensioner pulley bolt, and remove timing belt tensioner. Remove timing belt.

Some manufacturers are improving the bumpers on automobiles so consumers are less likely to face expensive repairs from low-speed collisions, but these improvements aren’t carrying over to sport utility vehicles. Four of the five midsize SUVs recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety allowed excessive damage (see table, p.2) in a series of 5 mph crash tests. Best and worst performers: The 2001 BMW X5 “is the only SUV in this group with halfway decent bumpers,” says Institute president Brian O’Neill. “The rear bumper is good. It allowed only about $200 damage in the pole impact, which usually is the toughest of our four bumper tests.
