The economics of sports, and more specifically sports attendance, is a topic that at first glance would seem a niche field in economics with relatively limited literature. When examined more closely however, the study of sports economics is a growing field, commanding more and more attention as the intricacies of sports have proven puzzling and fascinating to economists. Despite similarities in firm behavior and structure in the sector of professional sports, there are important differences between the different sports and their respective demographics that must be considered when looking at what drives attendance and ticket sales. As an NBA team is a product competing in the market for leisure and entertainment dollars, it is important for an NBA team to find the relative mix of what factors contribute to their game’s attendance, as this is one of their main sources of revenue. After Michael Jordan retired from basketball for the second time in 1998, strong power forwards and centers have dominated the NBA. For each of the past nine years since the “Jordan Era,” either Tim Duncan or Shaquille O’Neal, widely recognized as the two most dominant “big men” ever, reached the NBA Finals. While both Tim Duncan and Shaquille O’Neal are almost unanimously respected and praised for their unmatched skills, their style of play is generally described as “vanilla”, as noted by Eifling (2003).

Volunteer Awards Lunch England Basketball’s 4th Annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon was held on September 5 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. The function is a highlight of England Basketball’s calendar as it provides an opportunity to recognise and reward those who provide essential services to basketball from within clubs and associations. A wide range of volunteers - including club secretaries, area registrars, national team staff and directors of the Executive Board amongst others - were invited to the event to celebrate their contributions during the 2008/09 season. The quality and number of nominations received for the awards continues to surprise and please the awards panel and again they would like to make it clear that the choice of a winner is a highly subjective decisions and all of the nominees are worthy of recognition.

The National Basketball Association’s technology arm ACCESSIBLE BY plans to install a massive video-server storage system PARTNERS from SGI that promises to ease the way regional and national sports networks assemble highlight reels and player profiles. With thousands of men’s and women’s games each year, the league aims to make it easier to access video from current and past seasons. NBA Entertainment—the league’s programming and technology unit—is setting up the server system at its Secaucus, N.J., headquarters. The division has a Grass Valley Profile video server that can store up to 40 games a night. Archivists using Pinnacle editing systems will attach metadata notes to each play of every game stored. That will let networks easily retrieve specific plays. The new SGI storage area network (SAN) can hold 40 terabytes (TB), or about 1,800 hours of standard-definition content, and will ease long-term storage at the facility, making access to game content faster than relying on pulling content off tapes
