Description

Dear Fellow New Yorkers: Diabetes is epidemic in New York City. Diabetes prevalence has more than doubled over the past 10 years. More than half a million adult New Yorkers have diagnosed diabetes and an additional 200,000 have diabetes but do not yet know it. Diabetes and diabetes-associated cardiovascular disease are leading causes of death in NYC. In the past decade, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes has more than doubled among adults in NYC (Figure 1). More than 200,000 additional adult New Yorkers have diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed. This means that approximately 1 in 8 adults has diabetes. More than half of adult New Yorkers are overweight or obese, which increases the risk of diabetes.
