Case Study: Phoenix Convention Center, Phase 1, Phoenix, Arizona

Project
The Phoenix Convention Center expansion provides a spacious,
high-tech and client-friendly facility with approximately 900,000
square feet of meeting and exhibition space, and 2.7 million square
feet total.Through sequential demolition and reconstruction, the
new facilities provide three times the amount of space on the same
site as the original buildings.
The convention center remained fully operational throughout all
construction phases. Adding 570,000 square feet of meeting and
exhibition space, the Phoenix Convention Center is nearly tripling
in size. Completed in December 2008, the Phoenix Convention
Center is now one of the top 20 convention centers in the United
States in terms of size.
Our role
Rider Levett Bucknall provided cost management services, project
management, scheduling, value engineering and change order analysis
throughout the project. Current Rider Levett Bucknall staff previously served
on the convention center’s management team, overseeing the expansion
program through planning, design and construction phases. Rider Levett
Bucknall staff continue to serve as owner’s representatives for the project,
preparing for completion, close-out, occupancy and opening.

the cost and scheduling implications of potential design changes. The client
was able to get detailed cost estimates for all trade packages so that costs
were understood and reconciled with the CM at Risk.
